What the Lakers are trading to the Thunder for Dennis Schroder

The Los Angeles Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder will complete a trade involving Dennis Schroder on Monday— when the NBA begins authorizing teams to complete transactions.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the focus of the Lakers’ trade with the Thunder for Schroder will include Danny Green and the No. 28 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

A potential trade for Schroder would almost require the Lakers to part with Green in order to make a deal work financially. The only alternative would be if some of Los Angeles’ personnel with player options were to quickly opt-in, but otherwise, it would give the Thunder time to facilitate a trade with a different team.

While Green provided a helpful impact on defense for the Lakers, there are options on the Lakers’ roster roster to replace him. Between Alex Caruso, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (PO), and Avery Bradley, there are more than capable guards that are projected to return to the team.

The Lakers still have the Mid-Level Exception worth $9.3 million to add more talent to their roster. Executing a trade with the Thunder for Schroder will check a pivotal box in the playmaking department— opening up the MLE to fill a different need.

Perhaps most important of all, Schroder is playing on an expiring contract and is set to earn $15.5 million during the upcoming NBA season. Los Angeles could find themselves in need for finding a replacement next offseason, but even if it ends up being a rental situation, it’s worthwhile.

Dennis Schroder is coming off a highly successful season with the Thunder— featuring averages of 18.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. His production was strong enough to be a serious contender for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award.
