The Los Angeles Lakers have already made one major move this offseason as they look to improve their roster around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Dennis Schroder will be acquired from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Now, it appears that Wesley Matthews could be a target for the Lakers.
According to a report from Marc Stein of ESPN, the Lakers are interested in signing Matthews when free agency opens up.
Matthews may not be a big name, but he would be a quality veteran addition for the Lakers. They could use more consistent three-point shooting, which is what Matthews has been known for throughout his career. He is also a top-notch perimeter defender.
During the 2019-20 NBA season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Matthews ended up starting in all 67 of his appearances. He averaged 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. Matthews shot 36.4 percent from the three-point line.
Making the move to sign Matthews would not cost the Lakers much. If they were to sign him, the vet minimum deal would suffice.
At 34 years old, Matthews is all about competing for a championship. Well, the Lakers just won a championship and are favored once again to win next season. Playing alongside James and Davis would have to be of major interest.
It will be interesting to see what other moves the Lakers choose to make this offseason. Rumors have been swirling that they could look to swing a trade for a star. However, adding multiple role players who could play an important role would be a wise strategy as well.
Expect to hear more rumors about the Lakers in the coming hours and days. Wesley Matthews is a name to keep an eye on.
