Lakers engaged in ‘advanced talks’ with Thunder for Dennis Schroder

The Los Angeles Lakers are coming off a successful NBA championship run but will continue to improve their roster. They are close to doing so by acquiring Oklahoma City Thunder guard Dennis Schroder.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers and Thunder are in ‘advanced talks’ regarding a trade for Schroder. The trade package is centered around the No. 28 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Schroder is coming off a highly successful season with the Thunder— featuring averages of 18.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. He not only put up career-best figures, but he also did so with much-improved efficiency from his recent NBA seasons. This level of production is quite appealing for contenders like the Lakers.

It would be beneficial for the Lakers to acquire a talent like Schroder that can use his quickness to get into the paint while also being able to convert on catch-and-shoot attempts when playing off the ball. He thrived in those areas with the Thunder.

A potential trade for Schroder would likely require the Lakers to part with Danny Green in order to make a deal work financially. Both players are set to earn a similar amount of salary during the upcoming NBA season— making a potential trade fit within the parameters required.

The Oklahoma City Thunder appear set to undergo a rebuilding process to set themselves up well for the long-term while the Los Angeles Lakers are in full-fledged win-now mode. Moving veterans with value like Dennis Schroder can help to add draft selections.
