Anthony Davis officially declines player option to become free agent

The Los Angeles Lakers are coming off an impressive championship run in the NBA bubble. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way, the team will focus on reconfiguring its supporting cast to pull off another title run during the upcoming season.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes, Davis is officially declining his $28.7 million player option to become an unrestricted free agent.

The expectation is that Davis will return to the Lakers on a short-term contract. There is no reason to speculate on a potential departure to a new NBA landing spot because this is mostly just a formality.

The Lakers have already been busy making changes to its roster to build around LeBron James and Anthony Davis— starting with a trade agreement with the Oklahoma City Thunder for Dennis Schroder. The deal is expected to be completed around noon on Monday.

It will be interesting to see the terms of the contract Davis signs with the Lakers during NBA free agency. There’s a possibility it could be a 1+1 deal to keep his options open, or even a 2+1 deal similar to what Kawhi Leonard and Paul George signed with the Los Angeles Clippers.

If Anthony Davis were to depart from the Los Angeles Lakers at some point, it’s very difficult to envision that ever occurring while LeBron James is still a member of the team. With James still elite, it appears he has many years ahead of him leading the Lakers.
