Could the Dallas Mavericks sign Danilo Gallinari in free agency?

The Dallas Mavericks enter NBA free agency with the objective of adding talent around Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis— one of the NBA’s most intriguing duos. Could Danilo Gallinari be a potential option?

According to SNY’s Ian Begley, some within the Mavericks organization have interest in pursuing Gallinari in free agency. The team does want to conserve cap space for 2021— potentially complicating their pursuit.

Per sources, some with the Mavericks have interest in pursuing Gallinari. The Mavs reportedly also want to conserve cap space for the summer of 2021. So the franchise would have to weigh that factor in any offers it makes to Gallinari.

The main draw of having cap space for next NBA offseason is the abundance of talent the class features— headlined by two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Mavericks certainly want to be a player for top free agents.

It does seem the Mavericks aren’t limited to keeping cap space wide open until next NBA offseason. There are alternative options including making sign-and-trade transactions, or even just using a draft asset to shed a contract to open up the necessary space.

There seems to be an objective from the Mavericks front office to add a secondary playmaker to make things easier on Luka Doncic. Some of the options do not have expiring contracts either— meaning a Gallinari signing wouldn’t put them in a unique circumstance to other options.

The Dallas Mavericks have been through enough NBA free agency periods with high hopes of landing a star just to be left empty-handed. The focus should be to not go above a reasonable figure for Danilo Gallinari now and then adjust their salary cap landscape if a star agrees to sign with them.
