RUMOR: Rockets interested in signing Serge Ibaka in free agency

The Houston Rockets are coming into the NBA offseason with quite a few needs to figure out. Russell Westbrook has been rumored to want out and the Rockets want to add more pieces to their roster to help them compete. One potential free agency target that Houston has interest in is big man Serge Ibaka.

According to a report from ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the Rockets are expected to pursue signing Ibaka when free agency opens up this offseason.

Ibaka would be a very intriguing addition for the Rockets. He is the kind of big man who can shoot the ball, protect the rim, and do it all while not commanding a huge salary. If the Rockets can get him, they need to do it.

Plenty of other teams are going to have interest in Ibaka as well. In addition to the Rockets, both the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets are going to pursue him.

During the 2019-20 NBA season with the Toronto Raptors, Ibaka ended up averaging 15.4 points per game to go along with 8.2 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game. He shot 51.2 percent from the floor and knocked down 38.5 percent of his three-point attempts.

At 31 years old, there is a good chance that Ibaka will sign with the team that gives him the best chance to compete. He is going to want money, of course, but he is entering the final stages of his career. If that is the case, the Rockets are a potential landing spot, but the Lakers and Nets would be better options.

Only time will tell who will end up signing Serge Ibaka. The Rockets are a team to keep an eye on and would make a lot of sense.

Depending on what happens with Russell Westbrook and James Harden, the Rockets could end up being a team to keep a very close eye on this offseason.
