Lakers have an interest in trading for DeMar DeRozan from Spurs

The Los Angeles Lakers successfully pulled off a run for the NBA championship led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Now, the team will look to add more talent. Could San Antonio Spurs star DeMar DeRozan be a potential trade target?

According to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor, the Lakers have interest in acquiring DeRozan via trade from the Spurs— with a particular core of a trade package in mind. It would involve Kyle Kuzma and Danny Green.

“(Spurs) are also looking to unload LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan; I’ve heard the Lakers have interest in acquiring DeRozan (for Kyle Kuzma and Danny Green), and as mentioned, the Warriors may want Aldridge.”

With so many ascending teams in the Western Conference, it’s apparent the Spurs would be best suited tearing down their roster. The primary names that come to mind are LaMarcus Aldridge and DeRozan— both of whom now are in the NBA rumor mill.

There simply isn’t a legitimate pathway for the Spurs to contend for an NBA playoff spot at this stage. Meanwhile, the Lakers are very well in title contention and will look to defend their championship next season— making a DeRozan trade a logical route to pursue.

The Spurs can’t be too picky about what they’d like in return in a potential trade involving DeRozan since he’s going to be on an expiring deal if he picks up his $27.8 million player option during the NBA offseason.

The Lakers do have to make a real effort to put together somewhat of an attractive trade package because the Spurs have at least some leverage to consider. San Antonio understands that DeRozan can’t simply opt-out and sign with Los Angeles given their salary cap circumstances.
