Chris Paul, Clippers share a mutual interest in a potential reunion

The Oklahoma City Thunder will look to trade Chris Paul during the NBA offseason. The Phoenix Suns have emerged as the apparent front-runner, but the Los Angeles Clippers could be an option— forming a potential superstar trio with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

According to ESPN’s Ryen Russillo, the Clippers and Paul share a mutual interest in a potential reunion. In fact, Leonard has reached out to the All-NBA guard in an effort to facilitate a trade to Los Angeles.

The Clippers have a clear need to add a point guard that can handle the responsibility of running the half-court offense. In addition, that talent must be able to break down a defense off the dribble to create paint pressure for kickouts and finishes.

A talent like Chris Paul checks all of the boxes one would want in a lead guard on a team in pursuit of reaching the NBA Finals. The Clippers already have two elite wings, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but need a floor general type to help create easier shots.

The main benefit the Clippers have experienced with their current personnel is that Patrick Beverley is a pesky on-ball defender and can convert on catch-and-shoot attempts. Paul does both of that while being an elite facilitator, floor general, and reliable shot creator.

The Los Angeles Clippers would have no shortage of options to attack favorable matchups on offense by adding Chris Paul into the mix. Meanwhile, they’d be able to give just about any NBA team problems with their defense.
