Kyle Kuzma Seeking Sizeable Contract Extension
There was plenty of excitement surrounding the potential Kyle Kuzma displayed during his rookie campaign. His production has declined in a smaller role but that hasn’t changed his stance on seeking a large contract extension from the Los Angeles Lakers.
Since the arrival of LeBron James, there hasn’t been a need for Kuzma to fill a substantial scoring role. Then the trade for Anthony Davis has since tasked Kuzma with largely coming off the bench and he hasn’t quite led that unit as well as the Lakers probably had hoped.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst mentioned on The Hoop Collective podcast that Kuzma wants to sign a contract extension with the Lakers— one he is seeking to be ‘sizable.’
“Then you got Kuzma, who is extension eligible, still has a year left on his contract but is extension eligible,” Windhorst said. “And from what I understand, [he] is expecting a sizable deal, hoping for a sizable deal.”
The Lakers will have to hand out a substantial contract extension to Anthony Davis this NBA offseason. It will be difficult to field a comprehensive supporting cast that fills each necessary role by paying a ‘sizable’ deal to a player of Kuzma’s caliber.
If Kuzma is keen on getting a substantial amount of compensation on his next contract, trading him away his NBA offseason is an option for the Lakers. It could help to capitalize on his value now before having to be faced with handing him a major deal.
