Pelicans ‘openly discussing’ trades for Jrue Holiday with several contenders

The New Orleans Pelicans enter the NBA offseason with plenty of reasons to be excited about their future. Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram both look like future perennial All-Stars, but will the next few seasons involve Jrue Holiday?

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Pelicans are ‘openly discussing’ a trade for Jrue Holiday with contending teams.

The appeal of trading for Holiday from the perspective of a contending team is quite clear. He makes a high-level impact as an on-ball defender against the NBA’s top star playmakers— something that’s needed in order to hold an edge in a playoff series.

The main limitation for the Pelicans with Holiday is that he isn’t a dynamic enough offensive threat to be one of the top few players on a championship contending team. However, a contender that already has elite contributors in that department wouldn’t need that type of impact from him.

Last season was another successful campaign for Holiday. He finished with averages of 19.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.7 assists while leading an ascending Pelicans squad.
