Why the Houston Rockets Should Do It
To say the Houston Rockets are in a pivotal offseason would be an understatement. A new head coach and executive will be in place, and the direction of the franchise in the immediacy is at stake.
Trading Russell Westbrook signals a rebuild, but Holiday and Redick aren’t rebuilding pieces. Holiday could start alongside Harden and average around 20 points per game with 6 assists.
Redick is also a proven veteran, who’s sharp shooting ability would be welcomed in Houston in addition to Harden’s skill set.
But also from a financial standpoint, this deal gives Houston some breathing room in the long-term. Holiday can opt-out after next season, and Redick, 36, is a free agent in 2021. This means Houston wouldn’t be tied to a long term commitment in return for parting with Westbrook.
That’s the opposite end of the spectrum from Westbrook’s contract, which will increase in value over the next three years, culminating with his $47 million player option in 2022-23.
Lastly, Houston acquires a first round pick, as the Rockets get back in the first round. As of now, Houston’s pick, No. 22, is sent to Denver.
