This 76ers-Jazz mega trade would involve Joel Embiid-Donovan Mitchell

Why The Utah Jazz Should Do It

On the surface, yes the Utah Jazz is trading two stars for one. They get back Josh Richardson and two 1st round picks, but Joel Embiid is, of course, the main piece.

But consider this from Utah’s perspective: The Jazz have been evolving ever since Gordon Hayward departed in 2017. They’ve tried to make it work with Mike Conley Jr., and perhaps they’re willing to shake it up again.

But why would Utah deal not just one, but both of its stars?

If Utah were to ever consider this, it would probably be attributed to contract situations. Gobert is entering the last season of his contract, as he’ll hit free agency in 2021. As for Mitchell, he’s set to be a restricted free agent in 2021.

If Utah receives indications that one or both of their stars may depart, it’s better to capitalize on their value while they still can. The Philadelphia 76ers would then have to worry about giving both Mitchell and Gobert massive contracts at the same time.

Embiid would immediately become the face of the franchise, and the three-time All Star is under contract through 2023. Additionally, his contract is very favorable for an elite player at his position— earning him $29.5 million next season.

To round out this hypothetical trade, Richardson would be traded for a star for the second time in his career. The former 2nd round pick of the Heat was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in the sign-and-trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Miami Heat.
