Why the Wizards Should Do It
This deal in particular would give the Wizards a chance to rebuild around Herro.
If Herro can be had in a trade, the Wizards should absolutely consider it.
Beal is entering the final season of his contract before his extension kicks in. Herro, on the other hand can be under team control for the next four years before he’d be eligible to reach restricted free agency.
In this deal, the Wizards would be taking Herro instead of a top pick in the 2020 draft to send Beal to the Warriors or Timberwolves, for example.
Herro appears to be a star in the making, and he’s the type of talent a young team can be built around.
Because Beal has been in place for so long, any trade of him may feel like the Wizards are going for a fire sale and a rebuild. But it would certainly help to acquire a talent such as Herro in return.
The Wizards would have to face Beal four times per season with Miami, but they’d be able to do so with a retooled lineup including Herro.
