Dennis Smith Jr.’s NBA career was off to a promising start with the Dallas Mavericks before he was traded in the blockbuster deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis from the Knicks to the Mavericks.
Smith Jr. was the centerpiece of the return for the Knicks, in a trade that angered and confused the fanbase. After Smith Jr. joined the Knicks in 2018-19, he averaged a decent 14.7 points and 5.4 assists per game in New York.
But Smith Jr.’s production decreased significantly in 2019-20, which was an injury-riddled season for the 22 year-old. He played in just 34 games, with 3 starts.
There has been some trade speculation surrounding Smith Jr. in the past. As Ian Begley noted back in April, Smith Jr. likely would have been traded out of New York if Steve Mills remained with the team. Mills was ultimately fired, and Smith Jr. remains in New York for now.
Let’s take a look at five teams who should ponder a trade for Dennis Smith Jr. if the Knicks decide to trade him.
