San Antonio Spurs guard DeMar DeRozan has a player option on his contract this offseason, which he’ll need to address. But even if DeRozan exercises the option, he may not play for the Spurs next season.
DeRozan can opt-in to the final year of his contract, which would pay him $27 million for the 2020-21 season. But his tenure in San Antonio has seemingly fallen flat.
DeRozan, of course, was part of the return in the Kawhi Leonard trade to Toronto, at a time when the Spurs’ fan base was particularly angry at the entire situation.
DeRozan is 31, and even if he opts into his contract, he’s still just one year away from free agency.
Also, the elephant in the room is the fact that the Spurs missed the playoffs for the first time in 22 years. Their offseason plan is unclear, but it’s feasible that changes could be on the horizon.
