Why the Spurs Should Do It
The Spurs may need to rid themselves of any semblance of the Kawhi Leonard trade. It’s not DeRozan’s fault, but he is not Leonard.
The unusual circumstances surrounding Leonard’s exit from San Antonio placed DeRozan on a team that is unaccustomed to missing the playoffs, which the Spurs did this year.
In Porter Jr., the Spurs would get a solid two-way player who has shot 40 percent from three-point range in his career. Porter Jr. played in just 14 games this past season due to a foot injury before the season was suspended, but he is still just 27 and entering his prime.
Porter Jr. would also give the Spurs a chance to get younger in this trade, as DeRozan in comparison is 31.
The Spurs also add a draft pick in this hypothetical deal via the Grizzlies, which would give San Antonio yet another asset at their disposal.
