Spurs’ DeMar DeRozan could be a trade target for the Hornets

DeMar DeRozan was considered a star just a couple short years ago with the Toronto Raptors. Now, he is a good scorer with the San Antonio Spurs but doesn’t receive much hype around the league. However, the Charlotte Hornets might still be interested in making a move for him.

Bleacher Report suggested that the Hornets should look to trade for DeRozan this offseason. It makes sense and they were happy to explain why they think the move would be a perfect idea.

The Charlotte Hornets were 27th in points per 100 possessions this season. Each of their top five in total field-goal attempts posted a below-average effective field-goal percentage. If they want to get back to playoff contention, they need an offensive weapon who’ll divert attention away from Devonte’ Graham.

For a team that was as bad as the Hornets on offense, he’s worth the gamble.

If the Hornets do decide to pursue DeRozan, it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out a deal with the Spurs. Rumors have suggested that San Antonio has been open to moving on from DeRozan since last offseason.

During the 2019-20 NBA season with the Spurs, DeRozan ended up averaging 22.1 points per game to go along with 5.6 assists and 5.5 rebounds. He shot 53.1 percent from the floor overall and 25.7 percent from the three-point line.

At 31 years old, DeRozan has a player option that he will likely exercise this option. Assuming he does, the Spurs will retain him and be able to trade him. On the other hand, if he declines, DeRozan will hit open free agency this offseason.

Obviously, the Hornets would only be able to make this trade if DeRozan opts into his contract. They would then only have the 2020-21 season left on his deal and he would hit free agency next offseason.

Expect to hear plenty of rumors about DeMar DeRozan this offseason. The Hornets are one team that would make sense as a trade suitor.
