The Trade:
Miami Heat Receive: Paul George
Los Angeles Clippers Receive: Tyler Herro, Andre Iguodala, Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn, 2020 First-round Pick, 2024 First-Round Pick
I’m sure we already have a ton of people upset on both the Clippers and the Heat’s side of things. However, there are quite a few reasons that this trade could work for both parties involved.
Let’s start with the Heat, who are currently involved in a fight for the Eastern Conference title with the Boston Celtics. Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo are top-notch talents and adding George would give them a legitimate “Big Three” moving forward. George would add much-needed offense and is also a lethal defender himself, just like Butler.
Bringing in a star like George would help take the Heat to the next level. They obviously don’t need to make this move to compete, but to win a championship it would make a lot of sense for them to consider the move.
As for the Clippers, it is obvious that the George and Kawhi Leonard pairing isn’t going to get the job done. L.A. may have confidence that it can, but it might just not be a good fit.
If that is the case, L.A. could bring in a ton of supporting cast pieces for Leonard. Tyler Herro is a rising young player who many believe has star potential and Duncan Robinson is a lethal three-point shooter. Kendrick Nunn is another young player who can flat-out score the ball.
Add in the Heat trading the Clippers two first-round picks to help recoup some of the assets trade for George from the Oklahoma City Thunder, and this deal makes even more sense.
All of that being said, there is a very good chance that Paul George will be staying put. Instead, the Clippers could look to shake up other parts of their roster. Leonard and George do form a lethal duo, but George’s showing in the playoffs has raised doubts.
Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding the Clippers this offseason. George will hear his name brought up a lot too. If L.A. does explore the trade market for George, the Heat should come in aggressively and see if they can get something done.
