Why The Heat Should Strongly Pursue Danilo Gallinari
Quite simply, the Heat don’t “need” to add more star power. They have a star in Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo is developing into a legitimate star. Around those two guys, the Heat have a ton of top-notch complimentary pieces.
Gallinari isn’t considered a “star,” but he would be an upgrade at power forward. Miami loves playing small and have been comfortable starting Jae Crowder at power forward. While Crowder is a quality player and good defender, Gallinari would be a better fit.
If the Heat want to compete for an NBA Finals appearance, they need to add more talent and versatility. Gallinari can shoot the three at a high level, post up and score over defenders, and also put the ball on the floor.
Standing in at 6-foot-10 and just over 230 pounds, Gallinari would add even more spacing for the Heat. Yes, he is a better shooter than Crowder.
At 32 years of age, Gallinari will be looking to sign with a team that can offer him a chance to win a ring. The Heat may not be that team this season, but with the right offseason they could be next year.
A starting lineup of Tyler Herro or Goran Dragic (if the Heat re-sign him), Duncan Robinson, Jimmy Butler, Danilo Gallinari, and Bam Adebayo would be lethal. They would be one of the best shooting lineups in the NBA.
Gallinari isn’t known for his defense, which would be a bit of a loss from what Miami is getting from Crowder. However, the upgrade offensively would more than make up for the defensive loss.
Pat Riley is all about bringing talent to Miami. The Heat are in a situation where they don’t need an Oladipo or Antetokounmpo. They could add Gallinari and another piece and seriously contend for a title next season.
It may not end up happening, but this is a fit to keep a very close eye on this offseason. Gallinari will be a highly sought after free agent and the Heat should be one of the teams with a high level of interest.
