Ja Morant’s Unfinished Business
When Memphis shipped off long-time franchise guard Mike Conley to the Utah Jazz last summer just before the draft, it was a clear sign that the organization was invested in Ja Morant as their next franchise piece. That decision has been a remarkable one so far, based on Morant’s first year in the association where he’s undoubtedly going to win Rookie of the Year.
The former Murray State standout led the Grizzlies in points and assists per game, dropping 17.6 per night and dishing out 6.9 dimes. From his ridiculous passes to his ability to soar over bigs and finish above the rim, Morant did everything that Memphis could have asked from him.
He brought energy, passion, confidence, and a competitive spirit to the hardwood every single night and proved that no moment was too big for him despite his young age, hitting several clutch shots in the dying moments of games.
If they match up with LeBron and the Lakers in the playoffs, it’s going to be no easy task. The chances of them upsetting LA are unlikely, but given Morant’s pure talent and leadership, they could definitely put up a fight.
A historic rookie campaign like this is deserving of a shot at the postseason. Morant has turned this franchise around after finishing in 12th place in the Western Conference last season. A playoff berth this year would be the first of many for Ja and the Grizzlies.
