Pick & Roll Scoring

The main engine behind the Dallas Mavericks’ offensive attack this season has been the playmaking of Luka Doncic. He has been able to expand on his skill-set and capitalize on the much-improved floor spacing that comes with playing alongside a stretch-big like Kristaps Porzingis.

To put it into perspective, 46.3% of Doncic’s scoring possessions have come from pick-and-roll sequences this season. His elite output of 1.043 PPP (91st percentile) lays the foundation of his scoring repertoire. He does so by being highly efficient regardless of whether the defender goes over, under, or into the pick.

Opposing teams often try to engage Doncic very early in possessions after crossing half-court due to his willingness to have a quick trigger when it comes to deep range pull-ups coming off early ball screens. Additionally, he uses his impressive deceleration ability to create and knockdown step-backs in pick-and-roll situations, too.

Doncic has the necessary size and strength to get downhill and finish through contact when needed while having a reliable floater for the in-between game. It’s a key reason he has been one of the league’s most efficient high-volume interior scorers, regardless of position.
