Pros
With the Thunder possessing so many future draft assets, the long-term results are what matters most for the organization. Making a surprise playoff appearance doesn’t take away the team’s ability to add talent to its core as a result.
While it may sound counterintuitive on the surface to have an expensive player like Chris Paul when he’s towards the end of his career, he actually helps Oklahoma City’s future. Every day Shai Gilgeous-Alexander can watch Paul’s daily process, the Thunder benefit long-term.
There isn’t a pressing need to move Paul if the Thunder isn’t worried about getting a top pick in the NBA Draft or risking potentially barely missing the playoffs next season. Something to also consider, there is real value in young players gaining playoff experience.
Simply put, the Thunder currently is in a position to get the best of two situations; competing immediately and building long-term. Paul will be able to keep them competitive while also being able to serve as an example for the team’s prospects.
