Lue seemed like a slam dunk to get the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching job last summer, before talks fell apart. He is currently an assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers, and is reportedly Irving’s preferred choice to be the next Nets’ head coach based on their time together in Cleveland when Lue was the coach there.

Irving soured on Atkinson early, league sources told Yahoo Sports, and currently prefers Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue to be the team’s next head coach. Lue was the head coach in Cleveland when Irving hit the winning shot in the 2016 NBA Finals and was in talks to take the Lakers job before discussions broke down.

Lue garners automatic respect as a former player, and he has obviously managed stars before. He was just ultimately a poor fit for the rebuild the Cavaliers undertook in the wake of LeBron James’ departure.

The Nets are looking to get to a championship level, and Lue has won a title. If Irving gets his way, barring an unforeseen change, it’s worth betting on there being a reunion for the two in Brooklyn.
