Teams with high profile players can be subject to paying more than their salary cap allows. If they do this, they’ll go into the luxury tax. Now, if the said team wins a championship, the luxury tax isn’t a big deal.
The Rockets have a total of $136 million in player contracts this season. Capela is set to make $14 million this season. The Rockets have invested a large sum into Harden and Westbrook; they’ll make a combined $76 million this season.
Moving Capela could lower their cap and keep the Rockets from going over their $140 million cap this season.
