3. LeBron James Is Already 35-Years-Old

The appeal of the Los Angeles Lakers is that it’s an opportunity to play with LeBron James for a storied franchise in a wonderful location. Eventually, James will retire and all that will be left is the team’s history along with great weather, city, and lots of branding opportunities.

It’s important for Davis to not lock himself into a long-term commitment when it’s unclear what the future will even hold. There are a few major questions that even surround James about how he is going to choose to finish his career.

Is James going to try to play for the franchise that drafts his son, Bronny? Will he try to finish his career where it all started with the Cleveland Cavaliers? If either of those outcomes were to occur, that would take at least one season off Davis’ time with an already 35-year-old player.

In addition to not even knowing for certain how long James will be playing for the Lakers, there is a real question regarding the sustainability of his elite play, too. It’s obvious that James is a rare talent and has all of the tools to perform among the highest level for as long as he suites up, but that’s never a guarantee.

There is definitely a possibility that none of these concerns ended up mattering and that James stays with the Lakers for the rest of his career. However, it’s difficult to be able to project the future in the NBA given how many surprises take place annually.

At the very least, Davis can keep his options open and be able to put together a plan that fits his goals without being left behind by James. If Davis wants to be the franchise-cornerstone of the Lakers for the rest of his career regardless of James then none of this matters.
