Luka Doncic has already become one of the top superstars in the NBA in just his second season with the Dallas Mavericks. As he continues to improve and take the league by storm, he is also closing in on an impressive league record currently held by fellow NBA superstar Kevin Durant.
ESPN Stats & Info took to Twitter to share that Doncic is just one 30-point game shy of tying Durant’s record for most 30-point games from a player under the age of 21.
That puts the kind of scoring clinic that Doncic has been putting on in perspective. The Mavericks have become a legitimate contender in the Western Conference with Doncic leading the way. He is also still young with plenty more room to grow his game, which is a scary thought for opponents.
Coming into Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Doncic was averaging 28.9 points per game to go along with 9.7 rebounds and 9.0 assists. Those numbers are insane for a second-year player. His three-point shooting could use a little work at just 32.9 percent, but that’s been one of his few weaknesses.
At just 20 years old, Doncic has been one of the NBA’s top all-around players this year. Even Doc Rivers has stated that Doncic is “absolutely” in the conversation for the MVP award this season.
Expect to see Doncic continue on his tear. This isn’t a fluke and it would not be shocking to see the Mavericks’ superstar break Duran’t record before his birthday on February 28th. If he does break that record, it would only add to the already impressive legacy that Doncic is leaving in his early years.
