1. What’s Even Realistic to Acquire?

Part of the issue with trying to make upgrades at the trade deadline is that it requires having actual assets to get it done. While the Dallas Mavericks do have the Golden State Warriors 2020 2nd round pick, there isn’t much else they have to offer.

As previously mentioned, the Mavericks have been mentioned in trade rumors from time to time. However, they don’t what it takes to acquire a player like Andre Drummond and even if they did, he would diminish their floor spacing while also not providing strong defensive value.

The idea of adding a player like Iguodala seems better than what the actual impact would end up being. He is a veteran but the team already has a strong locker and doesn’t need to burn assets just to add a player where that’s the primary benefit.

The main player that does make sense to pursue is Robert Covington. Especially for a team like the Mavericks, you can never have too many ‘3-and-D’ wings. The main issue is that there will be no shortage of suitors for his services and other teams can offer plenty more than Dallas.

The NBA landscape in the summer is easier to get deals done with salary-cap space opening up significantly across the league. Also, the reset button is much easier for teams to hit when they aren’t actively having to try to win basketball games the day or two after making a deal.
