#2: They Are Missing a Big Man’s Touch

Trading Gortat to the Clippers came with both pro’s and con’s and at this juncture, Washington is witnessing the cons. The “Polish Hammer” averaged double digits in scoring four out of the five years that he spent in the nation’s capital.

Again, 10.8 points may not stand out on the stat sheet for everybody, but he provided stability in the paint on both sides of the ball. In today’s league, a lot of centers tend to drift out to the three-point line and fall in love with perimeter shots, which can make more for more volatilty.

Nonetheless, the 11-year veteran committed to battling in the post, grabbing boards and clearing the lane for his teammates. Over the years Washington fans had taken Gortat’s abilities and knack for the game for granted. Throughout the first few games, Ian Mahinmi and Jason Smith have been holding down the anchor at the five spot.

Unfortunately, both big men hurt the Wizards in certain aspects of the game. Smith struggles to stay in front of athletic centers and power forwards. On the other hand, Mahinmi condenses the spacing on the floor with his lack of offensive versatility.

Howard’s return to the lineup will give this 1-6 team a boost of energy on both offense and defense. The former Charlotte Hornet still has the ability to finish around the rim, protect the basket and score as a roller. Evidently, his career has taught him how to do magic like a Wizard (go figure).

Last season, he averaged 16.6 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game, which is more than both Mahinmi and Smith combined. Not to mention he averaged more than Gortat while he was in Washington.
