#2: They Need To Be More Aggressive From Three-Point Land
One of the problem areas for the Washington Wizards last season was the amount of three-point attempts they took, or rather the amount they didn’t take. The Wizards were one of the better three-point shooting teams in the league last season in terms of percentage, but they were among the teams with the fewest amount of attempts. That trend is repeating itself early into this new season. As we have seen in the last several years, the three point shot has become the weapon of choice for the league’s best teams (the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets immediately come to mind), but the Wizards haven’t embraced the trend.
Some of the team’s best players excel at three-point shooting, like Bradley Beal and Otto Porter. Getting knockdown shooters more open looks from three should be a priority for Scott Brooks and the coaching staff in the coming weeks. Washington won its first game thanks in no small part to three-point shooting, as Markieff Morris made six shots from deep in their win over the Blazers. That kind of output should be a point of emphasis going forward.
The Wizards have been aggressive in terms of getting to the free throw line, as they rank in the top five in both free throws made and attempted. If they can translate that sense of urgency to other areas of their offensive arsenal, they can be a much more dangerous team to deal with as the season goes on.
