X-Factor #1: How Will Lonzo Ball React To A Lesser Role?
According to reports, Rajon Rondo will be the starting PG for the Lakers when the season begins this week. While that may come as a shock to some, to me, it’s the best decision. For one, Ball and LeBron are close. Why does that make a difference? LeBron is a veteran, and a player Ball has looked up to since he was young. There’s no need for Ball to change his game for LeBron and that’s exactly what will happen.
Rondo is the better choice because he’s been here before. He knows how to handle the pressure plus deal with high-profile ego’s. What the Lakers need is a facilitator who can get the ball in the hands of players when they need it most. While Rondo is not known for his scoring, Ball, trying to prove his draft position this season, may look to score a bit more than he did in 2017-18.
Adding Ball to the second unit will give the Lakers a look that few teams have. Ball, minus the Rondo addition, is a starter for the Lakers, but where the team expects to be heading this season, he’s not the right fit. Will he be able to handle a lesser role? Better yet, will his father accept the role?
