2. Defense Wins Championships: In Crunch Time
The 2017-18 Rockets roster finished sixth in the NBA, allowing 103.9 points per game. Yes, Houston is capable of playing defense when they want to. Adding Melo to the fold will definitely take away from the team’s defensive ability.
Stating that Anthony will negatively impact the team’s defensive ability is no slight to the 34-year-old. However, the reality is that he has never really been known for his one-on-one defense. Often times the 6-foot-8 forward gets caught ball-watching or does not fall in line with the team’s defensive scheme. Sometimes the forward’s defensive intensity is affected by his lack of production on offense.
Anthony was signed to the Rockets because of his offensive ability. As stated earlier, the loss of Ariza could affect this team down the road. Ariza, who signed with the Phoenix Suns, provided the Rockets with a two-way player and a champion.
In addition to Ariza, the team lost Luc Mbah a Moute, who was a solid defender. Of course, Melo is a better player and offensive talent than both Mbah a Moute and Ariza. Nonetheless, Ariza and Mbah a Moute provided the team with depth on the defensive side of the ball. Currently, P.J. Tucker, who was outstanding for last year’s team, is still on the roster but that’s not enough on defense.
When the Rockets faced teams with superstars like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Paul George and others they had endless bodies to throw at them on defense. While on the floor, the 2003 draft pick does play with effort but he can often be a liability on defense. Placing Melo on the second unit will remove pressure from him and provide D’Antoni with rotation flexibility.
