Goal 1. Trust the Process
Unless something truly extraordinary happens this season, it’s highly unlikely that the Mavericks will make the playoffs. That being said, they still have an opportunity to lay the groundwork for future success. Coach Rick Carlisle should trust his young backcourt to learn and grow as they progress through the season.
Both Dennis Smith and Luka Doncic have the potential to be truly special players in this league – but only if they’re given the opportunity to adjust and improve early in their careers. Smith played nearly 30 minutes per game last season and started all 69 games he played in. The team has shown a commitment to him, and all signs point to the same thing for Doncic this year.
The Philadelphia 76ers were a team in the NBA’s cellar, and they’re now among the contenders of the league. They got to this point by trusting their young players to develop chemistry and also trusting them to make the right plays for the team. Things may not improve for the Mavericks as quickly as they did for the Sixers, but everyone has to start somewhere.
As Dirk Nowitzki transitions into the end of his career, he can serve as a valuable mentor and veteran presence for both Doncic and Smith, as well as any other young players the Mavs acquire.
So, while it might not be the most successful season in Dallas, it can still be an important one. The Mavericks just need to enjoy the ride and let things happen naturally – for better or worse.
