Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 Ways to Improve Their Offense Next Season

A More Aggressive Karl-Anthony Towns

Towns averaged 21.3 points and 12.3 rebounds last year on historic efficiency.

Here are his shooting splits from last year: 54.5 percent from the floor, 42.1 percent from three and 85.8 percent from the free throw line. Those numbers are astonishing.

In NBA history, the only other forwards or centers to reach 50/40/85 and play in more than 50 games in a season are greats like Kevin Durant (2x), Larry Bird (3x), Kawhi Leonard (1x), Dirk Nowitzki (1x) and Kiki Vandeweghe (1x), plus a random Meyers Leonard season when he played 15 minutes a game.

If you confine the results to just centers, Towns and Meyers Leonard are the only results.

So what can Towns possibly do to improve offensively? Be more aggressive.

Last season, the young big man only attempted 14.3 shots per game, behind teammates Jimmy Butler and Andrew Wiggins. The Timberwolves offense would be well served to see Towns’ shot attempts increase.

Towns grades out well in isolation situations (albeit a small sample size), and he is proven scorer as a spot-up shooter, a pick-and-roll roll man, in post-up scenarios and on putback opportunities. Get him the ball.

Additionally, Towns is a solid playmaker for others and can play the high post while teammates cut around him. He needs to be the offensive hub.
