Game #1 – vs. Boston Celtics: Wednesday, Dec. 12

With the departure of LeBron James to the Los Angeles Lakers, and more importantly to the Western Conference, the Boston Celtics are now the favorites to control the East. They took LeBron and the Cavaliers to seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals last year and did so without two of their best players in Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward. If everything goes according to plan, Boston will have a full season of all of their best players in good health, making them a formidable foe for any team in the league.

This mid-December matchup will be the first time the Wizards will see the Celtics this season, and it’ll be a good way for them to see how they match up with them going forward. The Wizards and Celtics have a good bit of recent history, playing on Christmas Day last year and battling in a fierce seven-game series in the Eastern Conference playoffs in 2017.

The Wizards were very successful against the Celtics last season, winning three out of four games against them. The games were hotly contested affairs, with the victorious team winning by less than 10 points in three out of the four games. Two of the games went to overtime and one of them even into double overtime. If this trend continues, look for these two teams to produce some great basketball.

Regarding matchups on the court to look out for, there are several. The Morris twins, Markieff and Marcus, will square off. How will the Celtics deal with the Wizards’ biggest offseason addition, Dwight Howard? Can the Wizards stop the young duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum? And of course, there is the main matchup. Kyrie Irving and John Wall have been among the Eastern Conference’s elite point guards for several years now, and this game will be another chapter in the rivalry between them.
