He Will Make An All-Defense Team
John Wall has been one of the better defensive guards in the NBA for a significant portion of his career, especially in recent years. Wall has averaged over a steal and a half per game four times and made the second All-Defense team in 2014-15. His athleticism and speed allow him to keep up with point guards and shooting guards, and he is a strong player for his size. He often attempts to block shots at the rim, even shots of larger offensive players.
He’s had four seasons of defensive win shares over 3.0, rivaling point guards like Stephen Curry and a higher number than players like Mike Conley, both of whom are considered to be good defenders, albeit in different ways. With players like Kelly Oubre, Otto Porter and Dwight Howard on the floor with him, Wall will have the opportunity to benefit on the defensive end.
The Wizards’ length and athleticism at all positions should improve their overall team defense. Last season, the Wizards were average defensively, ranking 15th in the league regarding defensive rating. A full season of Wall on the floor should improve that number. Depending on how his numbers improve and how the Wizards improve as a unit on defense, Wall may be able to make his second career All-Defense team.
