Washington Wizards: 3 Bold Predictions for John Wall in 2018-19

He Will Improve His 3-Point Percentage

Every player has their relative weaknesses, even the great ones. For John Wall, one of those weaknesses has been outside shooting. Wall is a career 32.7 three-point shooter, not exactly a great threat from beyond the arc. Despite the low number, he has made an effort to improve over the last few seasons.

After shooting 29% and less than 10% from three in his first two seasons, Wall has slowly but surely become a better outside shooter. Aside from an outlier in 2016-17, Wall has improved his three-point percentage in every season since those first two years. Generally speaking, when Wall takes more threes, he makes them at a higher rate. Wall took 217 threes in the 2014-15 season and made 30% of them. The next season, he took 328 threes and made 35%.

Wall even made 37%, a career high, in an injury-shortened season in 2018-19. The Wizards won’t need him to become the second coming of Stephen Curry overnight, but a better percentage from deep would improve their offense significantly. Three-point shooting was one of the Wizards’ strengths as a team last season, as they ranked 4th in the league in three-point percentage.

That mark was higher than teams generally regarded as among the league’s best regarding shooting, including the Rockets, who essentially lived and died by the three last season. If Wall can make himself a reliable three-point shooter, it should add another dynamic to the Wizards’ offense that can make them a formidable opponent for Eastern Conference opponents.
