4. Toronto Raptors
Notable Additions: Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Nick Nurse
Notable Subtractions: DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, Dwane Casey
Forget the Kawhi trade, the Raptors kept most of their roster from last year’s 59-win season. Yes, Kyle Lowry is a year older. However, the upgrade from DeMar DeRozan to Kawhi Leonard is massive if he is healthy. Plus, Danny Green is a solid player. Even if the Klaw is just a one-year rental, the Raptors should be one of the elite teams in the league.
In addition, Nick Nurse replacing Coach of the Year Dwane Casey is an ambitious decision. Nurse is the architect behind their surgical offense and a new voice at the helm could be just what they need. If he can get this team and Kawhi in particular to buy in, he could be one of the best young coaches in the league.
Lastly, Fred VanVleet had a very underrated season last year that was derailed by a shoulder injury that hurt the Raps in the playoffs. His precise 41% shooting from 3 and bulldog defense made him one of the best backup guards. If he and the rest of the Raptors are healthy, they should not be playoff disappointments, but possibly the team that makes it out of the east to the Finals.
