When the Toronto Raptors pulled off an improbable NBA championship run, a key member of their efforts was Marc Gasol. His passing, floor spacing, and defense were vital attributes at the five spot in numerous situations. Could he soon depart to a new situation?
After earning $25.6 million in salary for this season, Gasol’s current contract is set to expire. He would become a free agent with full flexibility to return to the Raptors, or sign with an NBA team. However, he will reportedly consider another option.
According to Xavier Saiso Garcia of Radio Ser Catalunya, Gasol is giving consideration to the idea of signing to play in Europe (h/t Sportamdo).
Spanish center Marc Gasol is considering a return to Europe, for family reasons, to continue there his illustrious career. Reigning World Champion with Spain NT, Gasol is now a free agent after completing the season with the Toronto Raptors, the team with which he won the NBA title last year.
There will be no shortage of options for the Raptors to re-tool around both Pascal Siaakam and Kyle Lowry in the offseason. With Serge Ibaka also being a free agent after this season, there will be roughly $48.9 million in salary bet
With the potential departure of Marc Gasol, the Raptors could very well be in the market for a replacement option at the center position. Bringing back Ibaka is an option for Toronto, but if they look elsewhere, finding a stretch-five that can protect the rim will be important.
